XXX Holic (Anime/Manga)

Well hello my darlings today is the first day of what I am calling the big 15!! I am on a hiatus of sorts however I won’t leave you hanging! I have set up for the next 15 days reviews of various material for you now let’s get started with one of my favorites XXX Holic.

The young man’s name Is Kimihiro Watanuki and during this series he takes up the occupation of …. A lovely witch’s man slave. How does this happen to a normal high school boy? Well he was never normal to begin with. Since his youth Watanuki has been cursed and blessed with the ability to see he paranormal. However this also opens him up to the influence of the creatures he is able to see. While being chased he happens upon Yuko’s house. Which she tells him is nothing short of ‘fate’ or ‘inevitable’ and in addition that she can help him with his problem in exchange for his service.

Throughout the series Watanuki goes through everyday life with school, cleaning, cooking, fetching her alcohol, and dealing with dangerous artifacts. However, all that is expected when you’re working for a shop that specializes in granting wishes while exacting unique costs for her assistance and magical items. During some of the occurrences they deal with things so seemingly ordinary such as a mother afraid she won’t be able to devote herself to her family due to internet addictions so she seeks out Yuko’s help. After watching the woman all day and seeing that the initial suggestion did not work Yuko goes to the woman’s house and smashes her computer and asking for only her child’s high chair in return. Although revealing afterwards what she was truly trying to get across to the woman by taking it. Also other instances have to do with magic run amok in which Yuko utilizes Watanuki as a pawn. No wish too big or too small for Yuko to handle.

During his days working for Yuko Watanuki learns a lot of things about himself such as his capabilities and even combing through his past to his first supernatural experience. …He also learns how to deal with the appetite of a witch, two small child like homunculi, and one small interdimensional controlling creature (Mokona Modoki) which can also deal with things of the spiritual realm. Watanuki also makes some new friends and performs feats he never thought he could do before while under Yuko’s thumb. Befriending otherworldly personalities and watching someone die after someone’s life is overcome with something so simple as a bad habit.

The art is an elegant style also seen in other CLAMP creations such as Tsubasa and Card Captor Sakura. With an equally curious set of mechanics. This book and anime is tied into multiple works with Card Captor Sakura and Tsubasa. I enjoyed watching the anime and reading the manga. It makes me want to pick up watching Tsuabasa and reading the manga again in which Yuko makes multiple appearances helping the main cast.

All in all everything even with the multitude of themes and life lessons I tend to like this series. I’m also a fan of Clamp’s work to begin with. The whimsical style with well-defined line work. This series covering so many things even ordinary things and showing the true complexity at hand is very likeable. The main characters are also simple yet very effective in construction. Such as Yuko, she is a woman that may be misconstrued as lazy and even lackadaisical however takes no meeting for granted while understanding each choice made leaves a lasting effect or impression. As much as Watanuki claims distaste in working for her he can’t deny he’s become a stronger and all around better man. In a way I feel a kinship here with Yuko… My husband and I have very different schedules and during my more topsy turvy shifts I find it difficult to do things so I attempt to teach him to do things hoping to make him better.

Although I can’t boast Yuko’s record and my husband can’t boast Watanuki’s cooking/comprehension skills. Well hopefully someday my husband will understand my wish for him to grow into the man I know he can be…. Now I just have to make certain he stops being such a hammer head. Well my dears this hatter is OUT!!! Wish me luck!
